A brief history of our Club from one of our long serving members who also served as Chaiman (1985 to 2023).
In his own words: -
Everything in life has a beginning and the birth of Willington Quay Bowling Club took place in 1933 in Howdon Park. In those days parks were the hub of activities for the local community as they incorporated tennis courts, paddling pools, putting greens, swings for the children, and bowling greens. In the case of Howdon Park there were 2 bowling greens along with 2 buildings which served as club houses for the respective clubs.
The bottom building was used by the Veterans Association, the opposite building by Willington Quay Bowling Club, and the Ladies Club. The larger top building was very primitive in its design but served a purpose to house 2 clubs.
The game of bowls was becoming popular, especially for men nearing retiring age. Leagues were formed in Tynemouth and District area and the game became very competitive.
Willington Quay Bowling Club had a green keeper called Jimmy Butler who lived in the Parkhouse on entering the park. The Bowling greens were his pride and joy to the extent of gaining a grand reputation. Lots of county competitions took place and bowlers just loved playing at Willington Quay.
In the years that followed, Willington Quay Bowling Club took part in and won many of the county competitions. At one stage there were 3 brothers by the name of Fairs playing for the club.
In 1961 the club held the presidency of the Northumberland County Bowling Association and in 1982 till 1988 a member by the name of Lenny Anderson served as league secretary. As you can see, W.Q.B.C. was a well supported and ambitious club. Times moved on and younger people started playing the game which became highly competitive.
One of our members George Unsworth Hall wrote and produced a book on the history of Willington Quay which is obtainable from the library. As you can see, W.Q.B.C. is a friendly and spirited club, and are looking for new members so why not pop along and pay us a visit. We'd be only too pleased to meet you and introduce you to a game which many people become addicted.
